About Institute

Research Programme

I. Development, enhancement and implementation of plant germplasm and new strategies in breeding of field crops.

Research fields:

  1. Studies on the genetic principles of field crop breeding, identification of genetic sources of the important agronomic characters, studies on their genetic control, and methods of utilization.
  2. Studies on the physiological and biochemical mechanisms controlling high productivity of crops, and development of evaluation methods of important quality characters.
  3. Research on the mechanisms controlling crop resistance to diseases, pests and environmental stresses. Identification of genetic sources of resistance and development of evaluation and selection methods for their utilization in breeding programs.
  4. Application of biotechnological methods in plant breeding e.g., micropropagation, cell fusion and selection procedures on cellular level, selection using molecular markers and gene transformation.
  5. Monitoring (survey) of transgenic crop cultivars and their products (GMO, Genetically Modified Organisms) imported to Poland, gathering of information on GMO, establishment and management of data bases on GMO used for research and commerce on the Polish market. Identification and analyses of GMO in plants and plant products.
  6. Monitoring of potato pathogens (Synchytrium endobioticum, Clavibacter michiganensis ssp. Sepedonicus, Ralstonia solanacearum, Globodera rostochiensis, Globodera pallida,) and other crops quarantine pathogens and pests in Poland for breeding, research and economic purposes.
  7. Running of reference laboratories for quarantine diseases of potatoes, and estimation of pesticide efficiency.
  8. Development and improvement of breeding methods, including evaluation of initial and advanced breeding materials under field and laboratory conditions,
  9. Development of production technologies (agrotechnics) for new varieties of oil crops, sugar and fodder beet and potato.
  10. Development of storage and maintenance technologies for potato quality preservation under storage conditions.

II. Seeds science and seed production.

Research fields:

  1. Studies on varietal progress, monitoring and economics of plant breeding, and seed production of field crops.
  2. Research on methods of enhancement of biological, technological and storage value of plant products, seed material, and seed potato.
  3. Monitoring, compilation, improvement and implementation of seed standards, and seed quality evaluation methods for field crops and seed potato.

III. Collection and preservation in viable state genetic resources (biodiversity) of plants and their pathogens for breeding and research purposes.

Research fields:

  1. Collection of crop genotypes exposed to genetic erosion, initial evaluation and long-term storage.
  2. Research on genetic variability of ecotypes and wild forms related to field crops.
  3. Collection and preservation in viable state of the most important plant pathogens.
  4. Documentation of genetic resources, exchange of information and collection of specimens.

IV. Development of initial breeding materials for practical breeding of field crops.

Research fields:

  1. Creation and development of initial breeding materials using different techniques.
  2. Estimation of diversity/unification of breeding forms using molecular markers and biotechnological techniques.
  3. Identification of genetic sources controlling crop resistance to diseases, pests and environmental stresses and other quality traits.
  4. Analysis of breeding materials, estimation of quality and quantity traits and their variability.
